Why can’t I switch between H.264 and H.265 on ClonerAlliance UHD Halo¶
If you are unable to switch the video codec between H.264 and H.265, this article explains the common causes and the correct procedure.
Common Causes¶
Recording is in progress — The video codec setting cannot be changed while a recording is active. You must stop the current recording first.
Resolution restrictions — Certain resolution and framerate combinations may limit the available codec options.
Firmware version limitations — Older firmware versions may not fully support H.265. Check your firmware version and update if necessary.
How to Switch the Video Codec¶
Stop any active recording by pressing REC.
Open the OSD menu: Menu → Record Settings → Video Codec.
Select either H.264 or H.265.
Confirm the selection and exit the menu.
Choosing Between H.264 and H.265¶
Codec |
File Size |
Compatibility |
|---|---|---|
H.264 |
Larger |
Best — works on almost all devices and editing software |
H.265 |
Smaller (up to 50% less) |
Lower — some devices and Mac software may not support it |
H.265 allows higher bitrate settings for the same file size, producing better video quality at a smaller footprint.
H.264 is recommended if you plan to share or edit the recorded files on a wide range of devices.
Note
Mac users should be aware that macOS has limited native H.265 playback support. See H.265/HEVC compatibility on Mac: ClonerAlliance UHD Halo FAQ for more details.
