How to Record USB Type-C Devices with RecDual Dongle?

This guide explains how to record video from devices with Type-C DisplayPort output, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Requirements

  • RecDual Dongle

  • Type-C to Type-C cable (included)

  • TF card (formatted as exFAT)

  • Type-C device with DisplayPort Alt Mode support

Note

No external power is required for Type-C DP recording. The source device powers the RecDual Dongle.

Compatible Devices

Your device must support DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C:

  • iPhones: iPhone 15 and newer (Type-C models)

  • iPads: iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini with Type-C

  • Android Phones: Samsung Galaxy S series, Google Pixel, and others with DP support

  • Laptops: MacBooks, Surface devices, and laptops with Thunderbolt/DP-capable Type-C

See Compatible Mobile Devices for RecDual Dongle for a detailed list.

Step-by-Step Recording

Step 1: Prepare the TF Card

  1. Format your TF card as exFAT on a computer

  2. Insert the TF card into the RecDual Dongle before connecting your device

Important

Always insert the TF card first! If you connect your phone first, then insert the TF card, your phone may prompt to format the card.

Step 2: Connect Your Device

  1. Use the Type-C cable to connect your device to Type-C DP IN

  2. Your device will recognize RecDual Dongle as an external display

  3. The RecDual Dongle powers on automatically

Step 3: Verify Connection

  • SWITCH LED turns blue (DP mode)

  • If LED is blinking blue, the device may not support DP output

Step 4: Configure Display (If Needed)

For Smartphones/Tablets:

  • Most devices automatically mirror the screen

  • Some Android devices may need “Desktop Mode” or “DeX Mode” disabled for mirroring

For Laptops:

Step 5: Start Recording

  1. Verify REC LED is solid green (TF card ready)

  2. Verify SWITCH LED is solid blue (DP signal detected)

  3. Press the REC/STOP button

  4. REC LED changes to blinking green

Step 6: Stop Recording

  1. Press the REC/STOP button again

  2. REC LED returns to solid green

  3. Recording is saved to TF card

Important: Audio Behavior

When recording via Type-C DP:

Warning

Your device’s built-in speaker will NOT work during recording.

Type-C DP takes over the audio channel, disabling the device speaker. This is normal behavior.

To hear audio while recording:

  • Connect headphones to the RecDual Dongle’s AUX port

  • Or connect HDMI OUT to a TV with speakers

The audio is still recorded to the video file even though the device speaker is muted.

Charging While Recording

You can charge your device while recording:

  1. Connect your device to Type-C DP IN

  2. Connect a PD power adapter to Type-C PWR

  3. Your device will receive up to 66W PD fast charging

Note

The PWR port only supports PD protocol. QC-only devices may not charge.

Tips for Type-C Recording

For Smartphones:

  • Close unnecessary background apps to reduce power consumption

  • Set screen timeout to “Never” or maximum duration

  • Consider airplane mode for uninterrupted recording

For Android Devices:

  • If screen doesn’t mirror, check for “Desktop Mode” or “DeX Mode” settings

  • Some devices may need DP mode enabled in developer settings

For Laptops:

  • Enable display mirroring to record your main screen

  • Without mirroring, RecDual Dongle records the extended desktop

Troubleshooting

No Signal (LED blinking blue):

  • Verify your device supports DisplayPort over USB-C

  • Try a different Type-C cable

  • Check device settings for display output options

Device Doesn’t Charge:

  • Ensure power adapter supports PD protocol

  • QC-only adapters won’t work for charging

No Audio in Recording:

  • This shouldn’t happen; audio is always embedded

  • Check if source device audio is muted
